What Makes A Great Workboot?

Posted by Jules McLellan on

Not all workboots are created equal. A great work-boot needs to protect you from a multitude of dangerous variables found on site such as:

  • Toe impact
  • Sole puncture
  • Static discharge
  • Electric shock
  • Soles should be oil and acid resistant.
  • Abrasion

That’s great! We know what you need to be protected from, but what does that mean in terms of the features you should look for that are used to manufacture a work-boot. First and foremost, you should pay attention to the materials used. The best material is a solid 6+ ounce full-grain leather and leather lining. Full-Grain leather has not been sanded, buffed or split which in turn maintains the integrity of the fibre strength for durability. Having both the upper and the lining leather makes the boot supremely breathable which results in less moisture build-up and all the nasty and undesirable things come along from having damp feet all day. Surprisingly, combined with a good wool sock to wick sweat away from the foot, a good pair of leather workboots should keep your feet relatively cool even on the hottest days. Man made materials smell after very little use. Properly cared for leather boots should actually be pleasant to get into even on the earliest mornings.

Next, look for a Goodyear welted boot. A Goodyear welt provides great structure with no interior sole stitching which can contribute to leaks through the holes made by the stitches. The welt also allows for the boots to re-soled and re-heeled as needed, rather then having to buy an entire new pair of boots. The upper should have multiple waxed lock stitch lines and rivets in high stress areas to augment protection. Take good care of your leather uppers. OK Oil is one of the best products on the market for keeping the leather moisturized and supple, and with an occasional resole your boots should last several years, not months.

If your job includes working around electricity., you will need a boot with an electrical shock (ESR) or Ohm rating. These boots should keep you out of trouble in all but the most charged situations.

Your soles should be a high wear, non-slip, oil & acid resistant. Soles without these features can literally disintegrate or peel off the first time you step in the wrong puddle.
